Introduction
They say the American English language grows faster than all other languages combined. One reason is the need to name each of the new technological innovations. Computer networking is one of the fastest growing technologies, and the volume of related terminology is growing proportionately fast. This book is written in such a way as to be useful to everyone from network neophyte to network developer.
The glossary entries are alphabetical within the body of the book. Hyphenated entries are sorted as though the hyphen were a blank; that is: "inter-domain" comes before "interactive." Also, acronym expansions are interspersed among the actual definitions. In general, an acronym expansion references the definition by saying "See..." In some cases, acronyms are defined via the acronym's expansion alone.
Several conventions are followed throughout the book.
- Commonly used acronyms for terms defined in the book are given in parentheses.
- Most acronyms appear entirely in UPPER CASE for ease of reading. Where an acronym is commonly expressed in mixed case, it will be so expressed in the book.
- If a term used within a definition is also defined in the book, it is indicated in italic. Only terms relevant to the term being defined are indicated, otherwise there would be a confusing number of cross-references.
- A "See also" following a definition indicates a list of other related definitions.
Some of the definitions refer to an RFC (look it up). RFCs may be obtained in many ways, depending on the type of Internet access available to you. They may also be obtained by mail. For more information, contact the InterNIC at +1 800 444 4345 or +1 619 455 4600.
